Ingram emerged victorious in the season’s final round in Wales, keeping his cool despite two other drivers still vying for the championship in the last race.
Competing in Toyota’s WRC2 car, Ingram ultimately defeated William Creighton by 20.8 seconds. The turning point came on Saturday afternoon when Ingram pulled ahead of the competition.
“What a relief,” Ingram said on the British Rally Championship’s official website.
“Will has pushed so hard today and we have had to give it everything we had. It’s been an amazing season, and I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s been an amazing competition. It’s not been an easy season, but that really adds to the story for us. It’s been amazing,” Ingram added.
Ingram delivered a consistently strong season in the British Rally Championship, winning three events and finishing on the podium in every event where he reached the finish line.
At 30, Ingram has previously won the European Rally Championship once. His 2019 title is memorable for the unusual fact that he did not win a single event that season but secured the championship through consistent performances.
The British Rally Championship title is certainly a prestigious achievement. Previous champions of the “Isles of Mist” include Colin McRae, Richard Burns, and Elfyn Evans, who now competes in the World Rally Championship with Toyota.
Next, Ingram will have another chance to showcase his skills in the WRC, competing in Toyota’s Rally2 car at Rally Japan. Representing the Castrol MEM Rally Team in the WRC’s season finale, he will wear Castrol’s iconic colours.
Ingram has previously competed in the WRC more regularly but has yet to achieve notable success. Nevertheless, he heads to Japan with his signature confidence. Known for his bold comments on social media, Ingram is undeterred by his modest track record at rallying’s highest level.
“To be given the opportunity to represent Castrol and its iconic colours and compete in Rally Japan in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 is absolutely incredible,” Ingram enthused.
“Being trusted with this opportunity shows the progress the whole Castrol MEM Rally Team, Alex (Kihurani) and I have made in less than a year,” Ingram declared.
Ingram is aiming for a strong result in Japan.
“We will remain fully focused on delivering an exceptional performance on what will be our first WRC2 entry with the Castrol Toyota and my first long-haul FIA World Rally Championship start,” Ingram stated.
The entry list for Rally Japan, taking place in late November, was released on Monday.
