Sordo last competed in Hyundai’s third WRC car in Japan last November. A six-month break is bound to be felt in the wrists, but the 41-year-old veteran driver is up for the challenge.

“It’s great to be back, especially at the Rally Portugal. It’s always a special race for all of us, both drivers and spectators. The rally is also a unique challenge for the car, given the high temperatures and the demanding nature of the stages,” Sordo says.

“Finding the right settings is key if you want to succeed in this race.”

Sordo is not the only part-time driver in Portugal. Toyota’s Rally1 cars are being driven by Kalle Rovanperä and Sebastien Ogier.

“It’s interesting when there are several part-time drivers because the competition has been really tight this season. Starting position is crucial in this race, so we’re sure to see some strong pushes from the back of the pack,” Sordo states.

Sordo has celebrated three WRC rally wins in his career, twice in Sardinia and once in Germany. Although first-place finishes have been scarce throughout his long career, the experienced Spaniard isn’t looking to cool his heels just yet.

“My biggest goal is to win, but the most important thing is to score as many points as possible for the team,” Sordo summarizes.

The Rally de Portugal features a total of 22 special stages, covering approximately 337 kilometers. The rally truly gets underway on Thursday evening with a spectator stage and concludes on Sunday.
