Most attention was drawn to the revamped points system for next year and the technical regulations set to come into effect in 2027. However, the FIA’s announcement also included other updates that will already apply next season.

A brand-new rule will allow teammates to assist each other during rallies. If a driver in a WRC team encounters technical issues, they can receive physical assistance from their teammates for repairs. Both cars must be nominated to compete for manufacturers’ points to make use of this rule.

The announcement did not clarify exactly what “physical assistance” entails. It is expected that one crew can help with repairs but may not provide spare parts from their own car.

According to the FIA, the new rule aims to diversify the role of manufacturer teams and enhance storytelling during events.

Next season, WRC rallies will also introduce a so-called command centre, designed to provide more data from the cars to enrich storytelling. Cars will transmit significantly more data during stages, all of which can be utilised in live broadcasts.

As part of the command centre implementation, communication and data transfer between teams and crews will be permitted, provided it is done through the WRC Promoter and for non-sporting purposes. The FIA will oversee and administrate this communication to ensure, for example, that teams do not provide split-time information to cars during stages.

A minor adjustment will also be made to the shakedown rules. Going forward, WRC teams will only need to provide VIP rides in one car during the third pass of the shakedown. This reduces the obligation to make all cars available for rides but still allows the WRC Promoter, teams, and organisers to offer experiences for high-value passengers.

The 2025 WRC season kicks off with Rally Monte Carlo in late January.
