WRC has now published a video on YouTube, listing the ten most dramatic crashes from various years of the championship.

At the top of the list is Hyundai’s Ott Tänak’s violent crash in the Rally Monte Carlo in 2020. Tänak lost control of his car in a high-speed corner during the fourth special stage and plunged down a steep hill lined with trees. The Estonian’s car was completely wrecked, but fortunately, both Tänak and his co-driver Martin Järveoja emerged from the crash without significant injuries.

Finnish drivers also feature on the list. In second place is Tommi Mäkinen’s crash in the Argentina Rally in 2002, while he was driving for Subaru. This crash was voted by fans as the most dramatic in history back in 2009.

“It was a really big crash. The car’s rear wheel hit a bank. I remembered the corner very well, so I can’t say why we slide so deep into that corner”, Mäkinen recalled shortly after the crash.

Also in the top three is Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville’s crash in the Chile Rally in 2019. This incident also had the potential to be worse, but luckily it resulted only in material damage.

Other Finnish drivers on the list include Jari-Matti Latvala’s career-worst crash in the Rally Portugal in 2009 and Teemu Suninen’s heavy crash in Monte Carlo in 2021.
