Hayden Paddon’s rally dominance might not be enough for the championship

Paddon has dominated New Zealand’s rally series in recent years behind the wheel of a Hyundai. Paddon, who has one WRC event victory to his name, has continued his streak of victories this year as well. However, Ben Hunt is currently leading the championship ahead of the final day of the season.

The reason for this is that Paddon missed the season opener. Skoda driver Hunt has not won a single round this season, but he has finished on the podium at every rally.

Paddon was predictably strong on the opening day of the season finale. The International Rally of Whangarei began on Saturday with ten special stages, and Paddon clocked the fastest time on each one.

He holds a lead of over two and a half minutes over Hunt going into the final day. However, this advantage will not be enough for him to claim the championship.

“Great first day at Rally Whangarei, leading overnight and leading the Asia-Pacific Championship. We are doing all we can for NZRC, but Ben is doing a great job in second, which is enough for him to secure the championship,” said Paddon, who earlier this season won the European Rally Championship title.

Hunt has no immediate challengers, allowing him to approach Sunday’s stages more cautiously. His task was made much easier after drivers such as Zeal Jones, Robbie Stokes, and Jack Hawkeswood encountered issues on Saturday.

Rally Whangarei’s final day on Sunday will feature eight special stages. The competition is also part of the Asia-Pacific Rally Championship.
