Neuville got off to the best possible start to his season a couple of weeks ago at Rally Monte Carlo. The Belgian star blazed through the weekend in his Hyundai, securing a full 30 championship points.

Neuville has been yearning for the world championship for many years, but so far, the title has eluded him. Instead, he has finished as the runner-up in the championship five times.

This season, there are practically only three championship contenders: Neuville, his Hyundai teammate Ott Tänak, and Toyota’s Elfyn Evans. Other stars like Kalle Rovanperä, Sebastien Ogier, and Esapekka Lappi are only participating in selected rallies this season.

“The fewer competitors there are, the greater the chances of winning the championship. But still, I don’t like this situation. In my opinion, it’s even a bit sad,” Neuville admits on the website of the Belgian newspaper La Derniere Heure.

“I have shared my ideas on how we could try to change the situation and spark more manufacturers’ interest. Now, there’s just an acknowledgment that there’s a willingness to change things. Something must be done quickly,” the Belgian emphasizes.

Although Rally1 cars are available to only a few drivers, this year’s championship is still expected to be fiercely contested. Neuville believes he has a good chance of claiming the title this year.

“Our team has never been stronger. I’m motivated to do everything I can to win the championship,” Neuville says.

Neuville, 35, has been around the WRC circles for a long time and has represented Hyundai since 2014. The Belgian ace has no plans to hang up his driving gloves yet.

“I want to extend my contract if I get the opportunity. Especially if the series introduces a new format or new types of cars,” Neuville hints.
