Hyundai has utilized its homologation jokers to enhance the performance of its Rally1 hybrid car for the upcoming season. The team has focused on weight reduction and solving reliability issues in the car.
This year, Hyundai harbors high expectations, boasting two star drivers in its lineup: Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak. Hyundai has yet to clinch the drivers’ world championship, but now sets its sights on changing that.
Hyundai’s main rival, Toyota, has dominated the WRC in recent years. Hyundai’s roster is rich in experience, including Neuville and Tänak, along with Esapekka Lappi, Andreas Mikkelsen, and Dani Sordo, who will take turns driving the team’s third car.
“Given the nature of the 2024 season, we believe we can fight for the drivers’ title. Ott had unfinished business with the team, and once we started talking, we realised there was a mutual interest to finish it. Alongside Thierry, we have two drivers capable of claiming the crown,” says team principal Cyril Abiteboul.
“Success in 2024 will be our focus and we are confident that we have the right pieces in place for this to be a reality. In addition, we also have a plan that looks forward into 2025 and 2026 that we intend to execute,” the French boss adds.
The 2024 WRC season kicks off next week with Rally Monte Carlo.
