Jari-Matti Latvala puts all the pressure on Kalle Rovanperä

However, the shakedown doesn’t provide a complete picture of the true balance of power, although it certainly boosts Hyundai’s confidence. Latvala predicts a tight battle for the top spots in the rally.

“Overall, the feeling is good. Now we have a full team ready to go, and that’s great. All the drivers were in good spirits, which is the most important thing,” Latvala told RallyJournal.com.

“Of course, competition is fierce, and anything can happen, especially on the second pass. On Friday, for example, Arganil will be quite decisive.”

Toyota is fielding four GR Yaris Rally1 cars for the first time this season, with both Sébastien Ogier and Kalle Rovanperä at the starting line. The aim is to gain a points advantage over their main rival, Hyundai, on the Portuguese gravel.

“Of course, there’s pressure. These spring events are critical and often quite decisive. The championship’s points system has made things a bit different. Now that we have all the drivers on board, we hope to achieve success and score as many points as possible,” Latvala explained.

Latvala expects the victory battle to primarily be between their part-time star drivers. He gives the lowest winning odds to the Finnish star.

“Kalle has excellent conditions to win. I believe Sébastien will try too, but this event suits Kalle better. Sébastien will definitely give it a go, but everything has to click perfectly,” Latvala concluded.

“In Sweden, Kalle was in top form, and everyone expected him to win. However, a small mistake proved costly. Everything needs to align, especially in terms of tyres. There’s no doubt about his speed. He can certainly win.”

Rally Portugal begins Thursday evening with a super special stage.
