The New Zealand rally series launched on Saturday with the iconic Otago Rally. The event annually attracts top talents from across the globe to its stunning gravel tracks.

Meeke is competing in the Otago Rally with a historic Ford Escort. The driver, who has clinched five wins in the WRC, is not contending for the overall win but is thoroughly enjoying the experience.

“Honestly, I’ve never seen roads as perfect for driving rally cars,” Meeke exclaimed.

“You’d think someone started with a blank sheet and said, ‘how do we make the most perfect roads for driving a rally car?’ That’s what the Otago region is. Yeah, it’s beautiful.”

After the first day, Meeke is in eighth place overall. The former WRC star suggests that the Otago Rally’s roads could even host a World Rally Championship event.

“I still imagine, what would it be like to drive in a World Rally Car. It’d be something else. It’s a magical place, and we’re here to enjoy it now.”

Meeke said he finds himself smiling at every corner.

“When you get into the wide open, fast stuff, there are these blind crests with fast corners. I was nowhere near committed enough, but I didn’t want to overstep the mark too soon.”

“I was laughing with the guys, saying if I took my flight home now, I’d be happy. That’s how beautiful it is to drive.”

The Otago Rally will conclude on Sunday.
