For years, M-Sport has held its own against factory-backed teams, achieving notable success given its independent status.
The driving force behind it all is Malcolm Wilson, a two-time British Rally Champion from the 1970s, who started the team with his wife, Elaine Wilson.
The Wilson family’s everyday life is featured in the third episode of the documentary series More than Machine, which explores M-Sport’s story.
The episode begins at the team’s original workshop, a barn, where it all started. This humble setup reflects the team’s approach – resourceful and close-knit.
M-Sport has built something unique, offering a warm, family-like atmosphere to every driver who has joined the team.
Rallying has always united the Wilson family, and it was through the sport that Malcolm met his future wife, Elaine.
“I was 17 when Malcolm came to buy my dad’s rally car, and that was the start of it,” Elaine recalls in the episode.
“Yeah, it started the business the same year that I met Elaine, back in 1979,” Malcolm adds.
The Wilsons have made every driver feel at home.
“I think probably nearly every driver has been through this house,” Elaine notes.
Elaine has always been a maternal figure to the drivers, ensuring they felt supported.
“And then Elaine has been the mom to a lot of these young drivers after they’ve had a, should we say Alex Ferguson moments? So Elaine’s looked after them and they’ve cried on Elaine’s shoulder,” Malcolm says of his wife.
Sir Alex Ferguson, remembered as the legendary Manchester United manager from 1986 to 2013, was known for his paternal care of his players.
