The WRC Promoter announced on Sunday that it has signed a long-term extension with the organisers of Rally Japan. With this new contract, Toyota City will host the WRC event until 2028.

This massive deal is significant for the entire WRC. It reflects Toyota’s long-term commitment to the championship, even though Toyota’s WRC team is not directly involved with Rally Japan.

However, the fact remains that the headquarters of automotive giant Toyota is located in the city that bears its name. Toyota is also the largest employer in the city.

Japan returned to the WRC calendar in 2022, and the tarmac event will once again serve as the season finale this November.

“Toyota City has been incredibly welcoming to the WRC since we returned to Japan. The centralised service park results in an amazing fan experience in the heart of the city,” said Jona Siebel, WRC’s Managing Director.

Toyota’s Japanese driver, Takamoto Katsuta, is particularly thrilled that Japan will remain on the WRC calendar for the long term. Katsuta hails from the same region where the rally stages are held.

“For sure it is big news for me, Japan and the Toyota team,” Katsuta said with excitement.

“I believe it was a massive job from the organisers to make the extension so huge respect and a big thanks to them for doing it. The next three years will be even more important for my career and life and for Japanese rally and motorsports. I try to do my best for sure and to get more fans,” Katsuta added.

Rally Japan will conclude the current season from 21-24 November. There’s a lot at stake, with both the drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships yet to be decided. Additionally, the WRC2 title will be determined in the final round.

The event’s headquarters will be based at Toyota Stadium, located near the city centre.
