Rally Islas Canarias, a fixture in the ERC in recent years, will be part of the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar in 2025 and 2026. As a result, a replacement from Spain was sought for the competition.

Next year, the Rally Sierra Morena will take on the role of hosting an ERC event. This rally, with a long tradition, is held in the vicinity of the city of Córdoba.

Rally Sierra Morena has been part of the international TER series for two years. The race was held last weekend, during which its inclusion in the ERC for the next year was confirmed.

Rally organizers started negotiations with the WRC Promoter, which also backs the ERC, a year ago. Practically, an agreement was reached last autumn, but the successful organization of last weekend’s race sealed its entry into the continent’s premier series.

Rally Sierra Morena was first held in 1978. Spanish legend Carlos Sainz was crowned the winner of the rally twice, in 1986 and 1988.

In the 1990 season, the Sierra Morena’s tarmac rally was part of the ERC, and the victory was claimed by another iconic Spanish driver, Jesus Puras.

The 2024 ERC season kicks off this coming weekend in Hungary. The Canaries will host an ERC round in early May.
