Tänak’s season has been a major disappointment so far compared to expectations. However, in Croatia, he again has a new opportunity to turn the direction of his season.

“It’s unique. Normally the tarmac is very smooth. And here, the tarmac is smooth, but at the same time, it’s really low grip, lots of cuts. Every corner is more or less off the road, a bit of cuts here and there. The biggest thing is probably the vertical, so it’s always up and down, always some jumps. It’s quite busy as a driver,” Tänak anticipates.

Tänak admits he is a fan of the Croatia Rally.

“I do like this rally actually. The grip is not too high, but at the same time, the speed is actually quite high. So it’s nice when you have good confidence,” Tänak said.

Croatia has suited the Estonian driver well in recent years. Tänak has reached the podium on the Balkan asphalt in the past two years. Last year he finished second, as he did the year before.

Therefore, Croatia should fit well for Tänak to turn around his poorly started season.

“We need to try. Obviously it’s been not a great start, but let’s see,” Tänak said.

“But there is a chance at every rally you come to. It’s just important to put the car together,” he continued.

Tire choices will likely play a big role this weekend.

“Tire choices won’t be easy. The weather seems to affect the weekend as well. So I guess it’ll be very busy for the team as well,” Tänak anticipated.

Even during the pace notes, the Croatia Rally route showed all its possible faces, and at times it even snowed.

“Everything is open in terms of weather right now, so anything is possible,” Tänak thought.

Tänak has collected 33 points from the early season rallies and is currently only fourth in the drivers’ World Championship. Without the controversial point revision, the Estonian’s point bag would be even poorer.

“Getting a result is always important. So, yeah, it’s not been great. Obviously, it’s somehow affecting the confidence. But from the other side, it’s also critical to put a good, solid weekend together.”

Tänak openly admitted that the poor start to the season has already brought pressure.

“But at least, you know, the feeling in the car is not too bad. I’m pretty sure if we can make the right decisions, we should be on the pace,” Tänak trusted.

The Croatia Rally starts on Friday morning. The competition ends on Sunday.
