Meeke’s career in the WRC’s top class ended after the 2019 season when he did not secure a new contract with Toyota. However, Meeke has not left the rally scene, as he has worked as a test driver for Skoda and, since last season, has competed in the Portuguese rally series with a Hyundai Rally2 car.

Meeke participated in the WRC2 class at the Rally Portugal a couple of weeks ago. This time, Meeke did not achieve significant success, as his rally ended in a crash on the final day.

During the Rally Portugal, Meeke revealed that he would still like to test his skills in the WRC’s top category.

“Most definitely. I feel I’m driving as well as ever and I’m still happy to be driving a rally car a couple of times a month. I’m still enjoying it,” Meeke said.

“Two or three rallies in a Rally1 car, a part programme, would be perfect. Certainly I would love to drive a Rally1 sometime. If it doesn’t happen, I know I’ve had my career, but I’m committing as much as ever,” said Meeke, who has achieved five WRC rally victories in his career.

Meeke set one fastest time in his class at the Rally Portugal. He also showcased his speed a couple of weeks earlier in a Portuguese rally series event, where he won and beat WRC2 drivers Pierre-Louis Loubet, Yohan Rossel, Nikolay Gryazin, Josh McErlean, and Jan Solans.

“A few weeks ago on similar stages when conditions were really tricky, foggy, rain, mud we were able to use our experience to beat all the WRC guys,” Meeke smiled.

This year, Meeke has been in a class of his own in the Portuguese rally series, which he leads with four event wins.
