Sesks is competing for the first time in a Rally1 car, and without a hybrid unit. Despite this, the Latvian is in second place, just over seven seconds behind the rally leader Andreas Mikkelsen.

Especially the second-fastest time on Friday morning’s opening stage was a surprise to everyone, including Sesks himself.

“It was a huge surprise. I didn’t expect it at all. Our plan here was to learn and drive calmly. It looks like we’re learning quickly. Of course, the most important thing now is to stay calm and keep things under control,” Sesks told RallyJournal.com

“It’s quite confusing. So many cameras and everything. It looks like we’ve done something. My first thought was that we’re not so bad, or that we’re pretty good with Renars (Francis the co-driver). Then a bit of stress came, thinking about how we’ll manage this going forward.”

Sesks will also drive a Rally1 car in July at his home event in Latvia, but then with a hybrid unit. Amid all the commotion, Sesks wanted to remind everyone that there are no major performance goals.

“I just tried to do my job. Our purpose is to gain experience, not to compete for results. This is incredible. You can play a lot with the car. It’s extremely fast in many places. This is definitely the coolest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Sesks enthused.

“I currently have a contract for two rallies. I don’t know more about what the future will bring. Of course, it’s hard to stay calm. I didn’t expect anything like this, but I’m definitely enjoying it to the fullest.”
