Teemu Suninen said it straight: “Things have not been done the way they should be at this level”

Teemu Suninen, driving for Hyundai in the WRC2 class, has fond memories of Poland’s fast gravel roads, but this year’s event differs significantly from previous competitions.

However, the nature of the rally hasn’t changed much. It’s still incredibly fast on narrow roads.

“The same challenge is ahead. The old route isn’t exactly the same, as it’s now reversed. Narrow and fast roads. It was quite difficult to make notes, as you can’t drive at the 180 kilometres per hour that you could in a rally car,” Suninen previewed.

Suninen has always enjoyed fast gravel roads, but it’s hard to seriously compete with others in Hyundai’s Rally2 car. The car simply isn’t very good.

“I’ve always liked these roads. Of course, it’s not nice to be the one falling behind when others are driving several seconds faster,” Suninen said.

Suninen has so far competed in two WRC2 events this season. The Finn began his season in Portugal and then continued in Sardinia. In Portugal, his journey ended in a crash, and in Sardinia due to a technical issue.

Suninen admits that there isn’t a significant improvement in sight.

“A tough competition is coming once again. There simply isn’t the performance, and things haven’t been done the way they should be at this level,” Suninen stated bluntly.

“I don’t believe anyone can perform any miracles here,” the Finn continued.

The Rally Poland begins with a super special stage on Thursday evening. The competition ends on Sunday.
