However, Neuville took third place and earned a few extra points on Sunday. Heading into the final round of the season in Japan, Neuville holds a 25-point lead over his teammate Ott Tänak.

The gap is significant, as a driver can collect a maximum of 30 points in one race. Still, Neuville needs to finish in Japan and score five points to secure the championship.

“Overall, a good weekend. Obviously we came here with the hopes of being able to secure the title here in Germany. We had all our supporters and fans here. It was nice to be along the stages and live an incredible moment with us. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” Neuville said.

“But nevertheless, still a good operation for the championship. We only lose four points against our main rival Tänak. Also in the manufacturers championship we only lost two points against Toyota. So at the end, a good operation for the team.”

The Belgian star has strong confidence that the 25-point lead will be enough in Japan. He can afford to take a more cautious approach now.

“Heading to the last round of the championship with 25 points lead is obviously a comfortable lead. However, we need to have trouble free race and a reliable car, especially for the Sunday to get through. Then we can secure that well-deserved title,” Neuville summarised.

“25 points is a lot. Nevertheless we need reliability and definitely to finish with something.”

The 2024 WRC season will be decided in late November in Japan.
