Neuville claimed his first-ever WRC championship title last weekend in Japan. The Hyundai driver led the series from the start of the season and held his nerve in the decisive rallies.

Neuville has become known for donating money to charity at every WRC event, supporting local causes. The better he performed in a rally, the larger the sum he contributed.

After the Rally Japan finale, Neuville put his championship helmet up for auction. The helmet, which he wore in the season-ending event, featured a special livery designed by artist Tadaomi Kawasaki.

The Belgian’s championship helmet was listed on auction house Bonhams’ website. It was initially estimated to sell for between £10,000 and £15,000 (around €12,000-€18,000).

That estimate turned out to be far too modest, as the helmet signed by champions was ultimately sold for £80,000, approximately €95,800. With the auction house’s commission included, the buyer’s total costs will surpass £100,000.

“I hope that this helmet is collecting a lot of funds for a good cause,” Neuville said on Instagram.

And his wish certainly came true.

Previously, Neuville had finished second in the WRC five times. This year, he secured his first world title with a 32-point margin over Toyota’s Elfyn Evans.

Neuville will continue as a Hyundai driver in the WRC next season.
