Evans had a good morning loop in Poland and moved up to third place overall past his teammate Kalle Rovanperä on the final stage of the morning loop.

After four special stages, the Welshman is 11.9 seconds behind Hyundai’s Andreas Mikkelsen, who is leading the rally.

“It wasn’t that bad. Maybe it helped a bit by the cancellation of this middle stage with the way the stages are cleaning. It’s difficult out there because of quite low grip. But otherwise, it went okay,” Evans summarised his morning.

“It’s always a bit difficult to judge when the grip varies so much, but overall, everything went well,” Evans continued.

The Welshman was also asked about his health condition, as he had been unwell before the rally. The Toyota driver gave a succinct response to the inquiry.

“I’m surviving,” Evans replied.

Hyundai’s championship leader Thierry Neuville had a very challenging morning, as the Belgian had to start as the first car on the road. Neuville is currently seventh in the competition, half a minute behind the leader.

“First and last stage had a massive amount of cleaning. I was fighting with the car through those conditions,” Neuville said.

“Obviously I’m trying to attack a bit. But the grip is just so inconsistent. Sometimes you are too slow, so it makes it really, really challenging,” Neuville continued.

According to Neuville, there won’t be any major changes to his car heading into the afternoon.

“The car feels good. We did some small improvements throughout the stages. So on that side, there’s not much to improve. Fresh tyres and we go again,” Neuville planned.

Rally Poland features four more special stages on Friday. The competition concludes on Sunday.
