The final round of the WRC season took place over a week ago in Japan. However, the season wasn’t quite over for Latvala and Katsuta, as the duo were back in action on Sunday in Japan.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing Rally Challenge event was held in Toyota’s hometown, Toyota City, where Latvala and Katsuta both competed. Latvala drove his historic Toyota Celica ST185 at Toyota Stadium, while Katsuta took on the challenge in a Toyota Rally1 car.

“I think it might be that there is a competition between me and Taka,” Latvala predicted beforehand.

Katsuta, however, threw down the gauntlet with a bold challenge to his boss.

“I’m going to beat Jari-Matti so that I get an easier next season,” Katsuta quipped.

The battle took place on the spectator stage at the stadium, the same stage used during Rally Japan. Katsuta had a slight handicap, needing to perform one extra “donut” during the run.

“I respect Taka, but my car is 30 years older than Rally1,” Latvala defended himself before the start.

“No excuses,” Katsuta shot back.

Latvala gave it his all in the showdown and narrowly came out on top.

“I had a perfect run. I think the handicap was very good,” Latvala laughed.

Latvala confirmed last week that he will compete with his Celica in the FIA European Historic Rally Championship in 2025. Due to his racing commitments, he will skip a few WRC rounds next year, with Toyota’s newly appointed deputy team principal Juha Kankkunen stepping in during his absence.

Katsuta will continue as a full-season driver for Toyota in 2025. This year, he finished sixth in the WRC standings.

Latvala has another event lined up this week as he is set to participate in the Monza Rally Show in Italy from 6–8 December. Joining him at the event will be Toyota drivers Kalle Rovanperä, Sebastien Ogier, and Sami Pajari.
