According to reports, the organizers of the Canary Islands tarmac rally have signed a two-year agreement with the WRC Promoter, covering the 2025 and 2026 seasons. The agreement is set to be announced next Monday.

Local newspaper La Provincia and the major Spanish sports newspaper Diario AS have reported on the matter.

The WRC event is planned to be held on Gran Canaria. Tenerife was also considered as a potential location, but ultimately the headquarters were decided to remain on Gran Canaria.

Rally Islas Canarias has been a long-standing part of the European Rally Championship. This year, it will be held as the second round of the season in early May on Gran Canaria.

The rallying traditions of the Canary Islands go back to the 1970s. The most successful driver in the event’s history is Spanish legend Carlos Sainz, who has won the rally five times.

Spain last hosted a World Rally Championship round in the autumn of 2022, but after that season, Rally Catalunya was dropped from the WRC calendar. With the Canary Islands securing the WRC spot, Catalonia will not have a WRC event in the coming years either.

Other rallies not included in this season have been linked to next year’s WRC calendar. The strongest speculations involve Ireland, Saudi Arabia, and Paraguay.
