The WRC2 class victory went in dominant fashion to Oliver Solberg, who left no room for his rivals. Solberg pulled away into a clear lead already during the first full day of competition.
Frenchman Yohan Rossel finished second in the WRC2 category ahead of British driver Gus Greensmith. Finland’s hopeful Korhonen ended up in fourth place.
Korhonen set two fastest times in class on Saturday. Ahead of Sunday’s final day, his position in fourth was well established, so he opted not to push at the end as there were no immediate threats behind him.
Driving a Toyota Rally2 car, Korhonen was the top Finn in the category, but this time he was unable to challenge the leading names.
“Right now, the main feeling is disappointment, as we didn’t manage to reach the podium we were aiming for,” Korhonen admitted.
“It would have required a perfect performance from start to finish, but we simply couldn’t manage that this time.”
Korhonen will get another shot at success in the World Championship in just a couple of weeks.
“The positive thing was that we managed to set some fastest times and challenge the leaders, but it’s not enough. We’ll try to do better in Sardinia,” he said.
Korhonen has had a packed rally calendar recently, and the busy schedule behind the wheel continues. Before Rally Portugal, he claimed victory in a round of the European Championship in Hungary. Next week, he will compete in Sweden’s ERC round, the Royal Rally of Scandinavia, before heading on to the WRC round in Sardinia.
