This year, Pajari clinched the WRC2 championship alongside his co-driver, Enni Mälkönen. After securing the title in Japan, Pajari announced that he would not continue working with Mälkönen.

Mälkönen, on the other hand, stated on social media that she had wished to continue as Pajari’s co-driver. The controversy was set in motion.

It was not the ideal start to Pajari’s new role as an official driver for Toyota’s WRC team.

“It caused quite a stir. The decision to change co-drivers was entirely the driver’s. We, as a team, did not have any input on the matter,” Toyota team principal Jari-Matti Latvala commented to RallyJournal.com

“Of course, we have suggested certain things when asked, but we were also very satisfied with Enni’s work – she did a very good job,” Latvala emphasised.

In early December, Pajari announced that Marko Salminen would be his co-driver for next season. Pajari and Salminen have previously worked together, winning the JWRC in 2021.

“Apparently, there were factors where Sami felt he needed a more experienced co-driver when competing with a Rally1 car. That’s why he decided to make the switch,” Latvala explained.

Pajari himself has not commented further on the controversy, as he has chosen to focus on what’s essential. Now, the young Finnish driver faces the biggest opportunity of his career, going up against the sport’s top names at the highest level.

Pajari already competed in three WRC events this year with Toyota’s Rally1 car. He made a particularly strong impression at Rally Finland, where he achieved an impressive fourth place.

There are no lofty expectations placed on Pajari by the team for next season.

“He has already demonstrated strong performances and posted good times. Perhaps the most important goal for next season is to achieve consistent results while gradually increasing his pace,” Latvala outlined.

“And it would be fantastic if, by the end of the season, Sami could reach the podium. I believe he can do it,” Latvala expressed with confidence.
